In November 2023, 13-year-old Juliana Peralta of Colorado Springs, Colorado died by suicide. Her family, the Peraltas, joined the consolidated multi-plaintiff suit Peralta et al. v. Character Technologies Inc. (D. Colo. 2024) in February 2024 — alongside the Setzer parents — alleging that Character.AI's emotionally-immersive personas had isolated Juliana from real-world support and reinforced suicidal ideation. Court filings detail Juliana spending up to 12 hours per day in Character.AI conversations in the weeks before her death. The Peralta case is one of three minor-suicide lawsuits against Character Technologies that are proceeding through discovery as of 2026, and is cited in U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy's 2024 social-media-and-mental-health advisory.
